Terry PratchettGods prefer simple, vicious games, where you Do Not Achieve Transcendence but Go Straight To Oblivion; a key to the understanding of all religion is that a god's idea of amusement is Snakes and Ladders with greased rungs.
About This Quote
In the book “Gods” by Terry Pratchett, he introduces a religion that worships a God whose name is Snakes and Ladders. According to the religion's holy text, this is how it works: you must play the game of Snakes and Ladders, but you must play it perfectly. You must do so without cheating or changing the rules in any way. What this means is that if there is a ladder on your way to a rung of a particular step, you must reach the rung – no matter what – without ever moving past the ladder.
In other words, you must reach that rung by climbing directly upwards from where it sits on the ground. If you do not reach that rung within three moves of being allowed to start your climb, then you have failed and will most likely be punished for cheating!
